Course Description

Covers the development of advanced intermediate level skills to work with children ages birth - 5 in a group setting. Includes the use of developmentally and culturally appropriate methods to support guidance and conflict resolution; development, implementation, and evaluation of environments and curriculum; and facilitation of classroom management. Recommended: HEC 201, ECE 124.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the multiple influences on early development and learning in order to support young children and families.
  2. Support the engagement of families and communities in the education of young children through respectful, reciprocal relationships.
  3. Use assessment partnerships with families and with professional colleagues to build effective learning environments for young children.
  4. Use a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching/learning approaches to support young children’s learning.
  5. Use knowledge of appropriate early learning standards, and other resources to design, implement, and evaluate developmentally meaningful and challenging curriculum for individual children.
  6. Apply knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspectives on early education to caregiving practices with young children birth – 5 years.

Course Activities and Design

  1. Prepare mid-term and final self evaluations of progress on the Associate Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation.
  2. Attend Mid-term and final conferences with the mentoring team (viz., supervising faculty and mentor teacher) to review progress on the Associate Standards.
  3. Engaging in the activities and tasks related to the Practicum 3 Module
  4. Create a developmental portfolio documenting integration and achievement of the Practicum 3 level Associate Standards for Early
    Childhood Professional Preparation.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Complete mid-term and final self evaluations of progress on the Associate Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation.
  • Participate in mid-term and final conferences with the mentoring team (viz., supervising faculty and mentor teacher) to review progress on the Associate Standards.
  • Complete all tasks and activities related to the Practicum 3 Module.
  • Compile and present a developmental portfolio documenting integration and achievement of the Associate Standards for Early Childhood Professional Preparation for Practicum 3.
