Course Description

Introduces the identification and utilization of different strategies to strengthen teaming and communication specific to early education settings. Covers culture and communication, including communicating with colleagues, staff and parents in early education environments. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify conflict styles in communication.
  2. Understand conflict styles based on culture and specific roles in the early education field.
  3. Apply an understanding of communication strategies to work with parents, colleagues, and supervisors in early education environments.
  4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of teaming dynamics.
  5. Identify the communication styles of colleagues and parents in the field of Early Childhood Education

Course Activities and Design

The course will include large group lecture, small group discussions, PPTs, videos, self-assessment, observations, self-assessment, role-playing, reflection writing and presentation. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to identity the five styles of conflict resolutions (e.g., Thomas/Hilman)
  2. Students will observe adults conversations in early education settings and identify the styles used
  3. Students will role play scenarios and practices communicating with differing styles in early education settings
  4. One- 30 minute observation and write up required
  5. Capstone- students will write an assessment of own style and identify strengths and areas for improvement
  6. Final 15 minute presentation on own style and growth over the course

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Self Evaluation of Conflict Styles

Identify the 5 conflict styles in relationship to culture (e.g., ethnicity, class, gender, etc.)

Basic strategies for approaching each style

Basic active listening and non-defensive communication skills

Basic understanding of teaming and communication issues in early education

Basic understanding of appreciation strategies in relationship to early education settings

Definition Clarification: 

  • Culture is defined as: ethnicity, gender, class, etc. 
  • Roles are defined as colleagues, parents, and staff, etc.
