Course Description
Origins of Fiber Optics and Fiber Optic solutions for communications. Introduction to design and plant cabling, cable preparation, pulling techniques, termination, splices, and cable testing. Includes cable and closure preparation, fiber cleaving and splicing. This class can be used towards Continuing Education Units for Oregon State electrical licensing purposes. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
This is the first in a series of courses in applications of Fiber Optics.
Hands on training in the fabrication of cable termination and training in specialized test equipment is included.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Demonstrate fiber optics termination.
- Explain the characteristics of Fiber Optics cable.
- Operate related test equipment.
- Identify applications of fiber optics in industry.
- Explain the difference between various connectors.
- Discuss a typical cable installation.
Course Activities and Design
In-class activities are made up of lecture, demonstrations, hands-on
activities and discussions. See instructor syllabus for details.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Procedures will be discussed at the first class session and the instructor's
