Course Description

Explores the unique stressors experienced by emergency services responders. Examines the Critical Incident Stress Management model and provides an opportunity for a mock debriefing session. Examines individual response to stress and the role that personality traits play in high stress situations. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify critical incidents and the typical responses to high stress situations.
  • Understand personal stress response and personality traits to effectively deal with stress in the work environment
  • Apply the CISM model to mitigate the effects of work-related stress

Course Activities and Design

Students will:

  • Understand the psychology of victimization and the impact upon individuals and society.
  • Foster understanding and respect for vulnerable populations.
  • Learn to observe signs of harmful stress in co-workers and address it appropriately.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Participate in individual personality typing and summarize personal individual response to crisis situations
  • Research and analyze a specific crisis situation and identify the survival links discussed in class and how they impacted the outcome of the incident
