Course Description

Requires passing criminal background check and drug screen before placement into mandatory clinical and internship experience. Part 1 of the 2-part Advanced EMT course. Department permission required. Recommended: BI 121, BI 122, or higher, WR 121, and MTH 60.

Addendum to Course Description

Contact EMS Department for application, which must be submitted with all documentation of all prerequisites, personal, and medical requirements. Personal and medical prerequisites include:

  • Negative TB test within last six months or clear chest w-ray within last 12 months
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella immunity if born after 1956 (exposure/history of disease is not sufficient)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis immunization within last ten years
  • Hepatitis B immunization series completed, or positive titer
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunity (exposure/history of disease is not sufficient)
  • Influenza vaccination (for current year)
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • High school completion or equivalent
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) card
  • Current Oregon EMT license

In order to successfully complete the AEMT course sequence (EMS 135 and EMS 136) you must successfully complete clinical and internship experiences. Prior to clinical/ambulance experiences, you must pass a drug screen and criminal background check.

On completion of the entire AEMT sequence (EMS 135 and EMS 136) candidates are eligible to apply for certification/licensure testing. At that time the Oregon Health Authority requires individual “yes” or “no” responses to the following questions: (Responding to these questions is NOT a part of your PCC EMT course application.)

  1. Do you or have you had within the past 10 years, any physical or mental condition that impairs, could impair, or has impaired your ability to perform the duties of an EMS Provider? If you answer yes, explain whether your condition is controlled by medication or other treatment and how your condition treated or untreated, affects your ability to perform the duties of an EMS Provider.
  2. Do you or have you used in the last 10 years, any drug or chemical substance for other than legitimate medical purposes that impairs or has impaired your ability to perform the duties of an EMS Provider?
  3. Have you been counseled about, diagnosed with, or treated for, a dependency on alcohol or drugs within the last 10 years?
  4. Have you ever been arrested, charged with, or convicted of any misdemeanor or felony? (Minor traffic violations need not be reported.)
  5. Has an employer or supervising physician taken disciplinary action against you related to your duties as an EMS Provider? (Discipline includes suspension, letter of reprimand, resignation in lieu of termination, a limitation or restriction of scope of practice or dismissal for cause.)
  6. Have you been named in a lawsuit alleging medical malpractice or misconduct related to providing medical care?
  7. Have you ever been disciplined, denied or revoked by the National Registry of EMTs or any health care certifying/licensing agency?
  8. Have you ever surrendered or resigned a health care license or certificate?

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Employ basic and advanced elements of Advanced EMT patient assessment, in order to develop treatment plans for simulated patient encounters
  • Perform appropriate interventions within the Advanced EMT scope of practice, with regard to anatomical, physiological, and pathophysiological differences in a variety of simulated patient conditions

Course Activities and Design

Objectives are met through integrated lecture, lab, simulation, and field activities. Medical clinical rotation and ambulance field internship are required for successful completion of the AEMT sequence.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student mastery of content is evaluated by using written and psychomotor examinations, simulation exercises, homework, clinical and field performance reports.
