Course Description

Covers maintaining residential and commercial locks and related hardware. Includes basic operating principles of cylinders, types of locking mechanisms, desk type locks, and master key systems. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed for building maintenance personnel who need to service and repair locks and related hardware.
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Explain the basic operation of lock cylinders and be able to name each components.
  • Operate the major types of locking mechanisms.
  • Operate desk and file cabinet locks and demonstrate ability to service standard models.
  • Explain and demonstrate ability to service a master key system.
  • Explain the operation of safe locking mechanisms.

Course Activities and Design

The class is conducted in a combination lecture/lab format. Instructional aids will play an important role in this course. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Class attendance, work assignments and class participation will make up 50% of the final grade. The other 50% will be based on quizzes and written examinations.
