Course Description
Explores responding to inquiries of the community and allied organizations in the community. Covers communicating and projecting the role, image and mission of the department to the public and organizations for the purpose of establishing strategic partnerships and delivering safety, injury and fire prevention education programs. This course meets the intention of NFPA 1021, Fire Officer I & II, Chapters 4.3 and 5.3.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion, students should be able to:
- Initiate action to address a community need or a citizen’s concern in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Respond to a public inquiry, so that the inquiry is answered accurately, courteously, and in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Communicate, collaborate, and cooperate with allied organizations, to address specific problems or issues in the community.
Course Activities and Design
The material in this course will be presented in a lecture, demonstration, role playing, and discussion format. Other instructional methods may include guest
speakers, research papers, book and journal article reviews, written and oral reports and presentations, classroom simulations, and video presentations.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following:
- Various individual and/or group skill building activities such as roleplaying, scenario based problem solving activities, case studies, or other exercises geared toward critical analysis of course concepts.
- Written assignments or oral reports designed to integrate course material into personal experience or experiences of others.
- Quizzes and exam composed of objective questions and concepts.
- Individual and/or team project/s which requires integration, application, and critical examination of course concepts, issues, and themes.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Using the policies and procedures of the department to create and deliver public education programs that address the needs of the community concerning fire safety, injury prevention, safety, and other problems that have been identified by the public.
- Accurately and courteously respond to public inquires of issues regarding public safety, injury prevention and fire safety and prevention.

- Work within the agencies policies and procedures to develop a program that explains the benefit of cooperating with other agencies so that the specific needs of a community are handled.
- Use an understanding of the local government to establish a relationship between different agencies that have similar missions.
