Course Description
Examines human motion in physical activity and sports and the integration of anatomy and biomechanics. Explores the anatomical movements involved in a wide variety of motor and balance tasks, postural stability exercises, and exercise program design. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Apply the principles of kinesiology and biomechanics to functional movement and exercise including but not limited to: directional terms, osteokinematics, kinematics, forces, Newton’s Laws of Motion, lever systems, work-energy relationships, pulleys and mechanical advantage.
- Define the six motor skill-related physical fitness components: agility, balance, coordination, reaction time, speed and power.
- Identify joint range of motion specific to each major muscle group.
- Analyze the structure and function of the major joints of the vertebral column, upper extremity and lower extremities.
- Identify and analyze the gait cycle including: stance and swing phases, center of mass displacement, joint kinematics and muscle activity.
