Course Description
Presents basic principles of anatomy, physiology, and exercise science. Introduces terminology, concepts, basic chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues, metabolism and the cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic and urinary systems. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
The format of this class will be lecture, practical lab work, class discussion, and/or presentations. You are encouraged to ask questions and expected to engage actively during lab sessions. Optional study sessions outside of regular class time may be scheduled.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe the structure of the human body using anatomical terms.
- Explain the roles of the skeletal, muscular, and neurological systems in human movement.
- Discuss the functions of the major organ systems and how they contribute to maintaining homeostasis.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Surveys basic anatomical terms, chemical structure, and cellular physiology.
- Identify, define, and apply key terms used in anatomy and physiology.
- Recognize and understand the components and functions of the metabolic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, skeletal, muscular, endocrine, nervous systems, urinary, lymphatic and integumentary systems.
- Effectively communicate in writing and speech your knowledge of anatomy and physiology in coordinating movement and maintaining homeostasis.
- Apply current research findings and issues as they relate to course topics.
- Demonstrate application of course content to exercise.
