Course Description
Introduces the fundamental principles and concepts of using Unmanned Aerial Systems/Vehicles (UAS/UAV) to create orthomosaics, point clouds for Digital Terrain Models and Digital Surface Models, and 3D models of buildings and other structures. Covers the FAA authorization process, mission planning and control, launch and recovery, and GIS integration. Required: Current UAS Certificate of Authorization from the FAA or meet course prerequisites. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Apply industry-standard UAS operations and safety protocols to effectively plan and execute missions.
- Fly UAVs using manual controls and waypoint planning for automatic flight with mobile and desktop programs.
- Utilize remote sensing and high accuracy GPS technologies to collect optical data via UAV platforms.
- Perform post-flight data analysis and image processing to create quality aerial surveys, mapping products, and 3D models.

Course Activities and Design
The materials in this course will be presented in a computer lab and field setting through classroom lecture, discussion, software demonstrations, peer critique, and computer-based assignments. Other methods may be implemented such as small group work and in-class activities.
