Course Description
Inspires close examination and evaluation of factors that influence one's personal health and wellness. Involves critical analysis of health information related to the biological, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental impacts on personal health from a wellness perspective. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Explain how biological, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors influence personal and community health.
- Apply the Socioecological model to assess personal health status and use a variety of wellness enhancement strategies.
- Use health literacy skills to critically evaluate and inform health-related decisions.
- Apply critical thinking skills to analyze strategies for self-assessment, behavior change and modifying health risks.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.
Assessment methods may include the following:
- Written examinations
- Written assignments
- Critical analysis of material
- Course activities and discussion
- Presentations and/or projects
- Participation in class activities

- Topics could include: Behavior change, Body image, Chronic Disease, Communicable disease, Drugs, Emergent health issues, Environmental Health, Epigenetics, Health disparities, Health literacy, Health prevention and promotion, Healthy relationships, Nutrition, Physical fitness, Psychosocial Health, Reproductive Health, Sexual Health, Sleep, Social and personal responsibility, Socioecological model of health, Wellness perspective
