Course Description

Explores children's health from biological, socio-cultural, behavioral, and environmental perspectives. Introduces strategies for children's health promotion and disease prevention. Examines factors impacting children's health and investigates causes and potential solutions for children's health issues such as environmental toxins, nutrition, epigenetics, illness and disease, trauma, racism, anxiety and depression. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  1. Explain significant public health issues related to children’s health and well-being.
  2. Analyze biological, behavioral, and psychological influences on children’s health.
  3. Describe how socio-cultural factors impact children's health.
  4. Evaluate and apply credible, evidence-based, public health approaches to children’s health promotion and strategies for disease treatment and prevention.

Social Inquiry and Analysis

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to apply methods of inquiry and analysis to examine social contexts and the diversity of human thought and experience.

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.

Assessment methods may include the following:

  • Critical analysis of children’s health information
  • Written papers and assignments
  • Groupwork
  • Classroom activities and discussion
  • Oral presentation
