Course Description

The study of influences on children and their families which impact child and family behaviors, values, attitudes, beliefs, and morals. Topics include: parenting patterns: cultural, religious and socioeconomic influences: peer, school, media, impacts; family development, community ecology, special needs children, prejudice, and public policy. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

The ability to interact with families in an Early Childhood Education setting, recognizing the influence of family and society on the socialization of children.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Demonstrate an understanding of the socialization of children.

Select an artifact that symbolizes a value from Mass Media to be shared in small groups.

Design a case study of a young child to depict the community's role in supporting diversity.

Present an oral report.
