Course Description

Introduces the social, developmental, and cultural nature of parenting. Covers parent-child relationships in social contexts, the work of parenting, and issues facing contemporary parents and children. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This is an elective course designed for students completing the EEFS degree, while also providing an accessible, interesting, and relevant course to students who are seeking to meet their professional development requirements in early childhood education, parenting education, family life education, family service work, and/or those who want to learn more about parent-child relationships.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify major concepts, issues, and theories in parenting and family relationships.
  2. Understand the dynamics of parent-child relationships from birth to adolescence.

  • Appreciate the process of parenting.
  • Apply the knowledge gained from course content to parenting practice and or parenting education/family life contexts.
