Course Description

Introduces parent-caregivers to observation and participation with their children ages 12 months to 2 1/2 years in a group setting. Covers participant generated parenting topics with an emphasis on designing developmentally appropriate experiences for toddlers. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Prerequisite knowledge and skills: Students enrolled must be currently involved in parenting young children.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

Apply and understanding of the typical growth and developmental stages of toddlers to current parenting practices.

Use developmentally and culturally appropriate guidance strategies to the parenting of toddlers.

Course Activities and Design

Parents and toddlers spend one two-hour class per week participating in appropriate parent/toddler activities which parents help plan. Parents also observe the toddlers and participate in discussions on topics including growth and development; guidance, discipline and behavior; health, safety and nutrition; communication and family relationships; and age-appropriate activities.

The discussion time may include any of the following methods: lecture, guest speakers, audio-visual aids, books and handouts and hands-on activities. Students are encouraged to share their own knowledge and to seek information from other class participants. Discussions are also used to relate information to home and class observations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students are evaluated on the basis of attendance and participation in discussions and  class activities. Grading: Pass/No Pass
