Course Description

Covers the past, present, and future influences on the delivery of healthcare. Presents the organizations and patient care settings where services are received. Introduces the financing, regulation, technology advances, and the trends in quality and patient safety for healthcare organizations and professionals. Covers the use of an electronic health record (EHR). Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of healthcare policy-making as it relates to the healthcare delivery system.

  2. Describe the different types of organizations, services, and personnel and their relationships across the healthcare delivery system.

  3. Explain the accreditation, licensure, and certification requirements of the healthcare organization.

  4. Identify the current regulations in reimbursement and clinical classification systems.

  5. Identify policies, regulations, and standards that affect healthcare operations and health information exchange.

  6. Identify potential risks to quality patient care and to the organization.

  7. Describe the use of an electronic health record (EHR).

Course Activities and Design

Health Care Delivery Systems is based on the traditional lecture/discussion format, with the content based on course objectives.  It includes application of topics studied using an Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate these learning outcomes by these tasks conducted individually and in cooperation with other students:

  1. Answer theoretical and application questions on information covered in the lecture, graded assignments and reading assignments through quizzes and EHR assignments.

  2. Demonstrate ability to research information on current trends in health care delivery and present it in written form.

Subject Matter, Concepts, Themes, Issues:
The following list outlines the concepts, themes and issues you need to understand and be able to use appropriately. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding in written form, individually and in groups. You will demonstrate skills in library research and strategies.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

1.0 HISTORY OF HEALTHCARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS
The goal is to familiarize the student with the historical developments which influenced the delivery of health care and the health industry.

2.0 ORGANIZATION OF HEALTH CARE FACILITIES
The goal is to understand the organizational structure of health care facilities.  Students will understand the role of health care professionals in various settings and health care documentation requirements.

3.0 FINANCING HEALTH CARE
The goal is to have students obtain a workable knowledge of health care financing, reimbursement and insurance in the United States.

4.0 GOVERNMENTAL AND STATE ROLES IN THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to introduce the student to the federal and state governmental influence on the delivery of health care and become familiar with key regulations affecting health care delivery.  Emphasis is placed on the newer regulations that apply to health care quality and patient safety.

5.0 ACCREDITATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE IN THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to have students obtain an overview of the accrediting, certifying and licensing in the health care delivery system for individuals and organizations.

6.0 ORGANIZATIONS INFLUENCING THE HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEM
The goal is to familiarize students with the professional organizations that influence the delivery of health care.

7.0 HEALTH CARE TECHNOLOGY

The goal is to familiarize students with the rapidly changing field of health care technology and understand how electronic health records are used in various settings and how they interact with other technology.  Students will become familiar with health information exchanges.

8.0 CURRENT TRENDS IN HEALTH CARE DELIVERY SYSTEMS
The goal is to introduce the student to current trends and problems in the delivery of health care.
