Course Description

Incorporates basic functional and aesthetic design principles for residential kitchen and bath planning, and chronicles the kitchen and bath planning process from conceptual design to construction completion. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On successful completion of the course students should be able
to:
1. Program kitchen and bath design for client needs.
2. Perform kitchen and bath planning according to NKBA guidelines.
3. Be familiar with appliances and fixtures necessary for kitchen and bath design.
4. Understand cabinetry nomenclature and sourcing.
5. Create a complete NKBA drawing set for a kitchen remodel.

1. Be familiar with appliances and fixtures necessary for kitchen and bath design.

3. Feel comfortable creating entire NKBA drawing set for a kitchen remodel.

  • Students construct drafted documents throughout the term which require National Kitchen and Bath Association [NKBA] and architectural drafting standards: dimensioning with scale integers is required.
  • Drawing types include plan and elevation which are scaled drawings with extensive dimensioning for installation/ implementation of the design scheme.
  • Create a basic appliance and fixture budget for a project. Perform computation exercises to understand material estimating on kitchen and bath projects.

Communication

1. Program kitchen and bath design for client needs.
 

  • Students are required to communicate their design solutions in casual and formal critiques.
  • Students must explain verbally their "design/ problem solving" efforts.
  • Students are required to verbally communicate their product specification process.
     

Human Relations
Hours: 20

1. Program kitchen and bath design for client needs.
2. Perform kitchen and bath planning according to NKBA guidelines.
 

  • Students are required to demonstrate knowledge of user needs and profiles.
  • Students study users of all abilities and mobilities and design kitchens and bathrooms appropriate to these people (clients).
  • Students must comprehend the impact of their design on the health, safety and welfare of the users (clients).
