Course Description

Focuses on grammatical features, non-manual behaviors and higher language skill development in ASL. Includes a wide range of academic topics in ASL.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate respect, knowledge, and understanding of Deaf people and ASL with an appreciation for their linguistic and cultural diversity.
  • Understand and explain advanced grammatical features and non-manual markers in ASL.
  • Produce signs, fingerspelled words, and numbers when appropriate with 70 percent accuracy.
  • Depict and identify objects and constructed actions using appropriate classifiers and space.
  • Demonstrate use of ASL at intermediate high level. 

Course Activities and Design


This course will include live and recorded demonstrations, lectures, drills, videos, small group discussions, student presentations, and other hands-on activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Assessment strategies include observation of students' in-class receptive and expressive skill in ASL, written quizzes on receptive skill and knowledge of grammatical features, and recording students' expressive skill in ASL.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Includes all or most of the following:

  • Various current issues will analyzed and discussed on how to express these topics with appropriate classifiers and space
  • Analysis and demonstration of spatialization; the students will demonstrate the skill in context
  • Analysis and demonstration of pronominalization; the students will demonstrate the skill in context
  • Analysis of grammatical features and non-manual markers and how to demonstrate them in ASL 
  • Techniques for giving feedback in a professional and supportive manner
