Course Description

Emphasizes increased fingerspelling skills by incorporating them into the context of ASL conversation. Introduces some strategies and proper production when fingerspelling.

Addendum to Course Description

All class activities will be conducted in ASL. Spoken English will not be used.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Use fingerspelling when linguistically appropriate with 70% accuracy.
  • Produce ASL numbering systems correctly with 70% accuracy.
  • Produce fingerspelled words and numbers with appropriate hand and arm position, palm orientation, handshape, movement, and non-manual signals.
  • Use cloze skills to determine semantic content of fingerspelled words.
  • Recognize the difference between the shape and movement of rapid, lexicalized, and non-lexicalized fingerspelled words as an aid to comprehension.
  • Comprehend fingerspelled words and numbers with 70% accuracy.

Course Activities and Design


This course will include live and recorded demonstrations, drills, lecture, student presentations, games, and other hands-on activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Strategies may include quizzes to assess receptive skills and recorded student narratives to assess expressive skills.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Fingerspelling for names, proper nouns, place names, and technical terms; Lexicalized fingerspelling; ASL numbering systems: cardinal, nominal, ordinal, pronominal, ranking, age, currency, time, calendar system, height, weight, measurement, sports, and mathematical computation.
