Course Description

Continues work of ITP 120. Emphasizes increased fingerspelling skill by incorporation into the context of ASL conversation in depth. Admission into Sign Language Interpretation program required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course continues the work of ITP 120, emphasizing increased expressive and receptive fingerspelling and number skills in context. The course focuses on developing a degree of clarity and fluency suitable for interpreting, rather than conversational, purposes, and on using fingerspelling and numbers in interpretations.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Intended Outcomes for the course

Students will read fingerspelled words and numbers in context, as presented live and on videotape by both familiar and unfamiliar signers, with 70% accuracy.

Students will use cloze skills as needed to determine probable semantic content of fingerspelled words.

Students will produce cardinal numbers 1 to one million accurately and without hesitation, independently and in context, with 70% accuracy.

Articulation will be evaluated for its appropriateness to interpreting, rather than to conversational use.

 Students will produce ordinal numbers, time numbers, and numbers for other purposes accurately and without hesitation, independently and in context with 70% accuracy. Articulation will be evaluated for its appropriateness to interpreting, rather than to conversational use.

Students will produce short narratives which include fingerspelling, lexicalized fingerspelling and numbers, producing fingerspelling and numbers clearly, accurately and without hesitation, including them in the flow of signing with appropriate prosody. Articulation will be evaluated for its appropriateness to interpreting, rather than to conversational use.

Students will interpret into ASL short, factual paragraphs which require fingerspelling and numbers, producing fingerspelling and numbers clearly,accurately and without hesitation, including them in the flow of signing with appropriate prosody. Course Activities and Design

In class activities may include student presentations, interpretation of brief passages which require the use of fingerspelling or numbers, games, real-world experiences, and drills.

Outcome Assessment Strategies


Assessments will be done by means of quizzes for receptive skills and videotaping of expressive skills.

Themes for presentations and quizzes may include current and historical

events, technical subjects, financial information, place names, and others as

appropriate. Fingerspelling topics covered will include rapid, careful and

lexicalized fingerspelling; quantifiers and approximations, time numbers,

money numbers, addresses and telephone numbers, and measurements.
