Course Description

Covers best practices for specialized interpreting settings such as CDI/CHI teams, DeafBlind, VRS, VRI, religious, performing arts, medical, mental health and legal. Outlines qualifications necessary for working in each specific setting. Includes discussion of current research in the field.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Discuss appropriate logistics, terminology, and roles for a given setting in the field of interpreting.

  • Identify appropriate skills and qualifications necessary for interpreters working in these settings.

  • Identify varying consumer needs and perspectives in a given scenario.

  • Apply the professional code of ethics to given scenarios. 

  • Explore current research impacting the field of interpreting.

Course Activities and Design

Activities include readings, lectures, student-led discussions, research review, and ethical analysis.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be evaluated through homework assignments, quizzes, and case study analysis.
