Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
1. Identify, administer, and document medications based on usage outcomes, side effects and according to the principles of the 6 rights in a clinical setting.
2. Collect, process, and test diagnostic specimens and document follow-up on results in a clinical setting.
3. Apply current up-to-date quality control and safety principles in the workplace.
4. Skillfully assist, perform and document routine clinical procedures according to office protocol.
5. Effectively apply verbal, nonverbal and written communication principles and skills in the workplace.
6. Maintain ethical standards and confidentiality for patient privacy and practice integrity.
Course Activities and Design
Students are assigned to a clinical office during the third term of the Medical Assisting program. The assignment in each office is for an eight week rotation. The offices are selected by the course instructor. Insofar as possible, student requests for assignment will be taken into consideration. Office assignment will be scheduled for one eight-hour shift per week in accordance with the program schedule. Hours of assignment are based on office requirements and will be indicated on a schedule published by the course instructor. Students are required to wear uniforms conforming to the requirements set forth by the PCC Medical Assisting Program. Apparel should consist of a navy blue lab jacket with a name badge, a white uniform (top and pants or dress) and white duty shoes. These items are purchased by the student in accordance with the guidelines provided by the course instructor.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Student performance is evaluated by the supervisor to whom the student is assigned at
the medical office.
The grading system utilized for the course is “Pass” or “No Pass”. In order to receive a
“Pass” grade, the student must:
1. Satisfactorily complete the objectives listed for the Medical Assistant.
2. Receive satisfactory evaluations from each of the work area supervisors.
3. Complete all of the time assigned. (192 hours)

communicate professionally and understand what needs to be prepared in order to do so
use medical terminology in all aspects of the medical office

transmit information in a confidential and professional manner
utilize their skills in recognizing verbal and non verbal communication
use the ICD9 manual or electronic coding systems to access codes.
use the CPT or manual electronic coding systems to access codes.
observe the proper usage of third party guidelines system

abide by all safety rules and regulations regarding equipment
observe and learn time management when scheduling patient appointments
