Introduces material removal operations emphasizing basic part layout, drilling, manual milling and manual lathe processes with an emphasis on production speeds and feeds. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion, students should be able to:

  1. Understand and apply machine shop safety concepts and safety practices.
  2. Conceptualize basic manual machining processes, setups and strategies to machine metal parts while applying industry standard feeds and speeds.
  3. Use precision measuring instruments to machine and inspect assigned metal projects.
  4. Fabricate a sheet metal project to blueprint specifications using basic layout tools, drill press, bandsaw, and hand tools.
  5. Set up and operate a manual milling machine to face mill, end mill, side mill, drill, ream, and chamfer an assigned project to blueprint specifications.
  6. Set up and operate a manual lathe to drill, face, turn, groove, taper and file an assigned project to blueprint specifications.
  7. Communicate with instructors and others and maintain close dialogue while completing  safe and efficient industry standard machining processes and techniques.

Course Activities and Design

This course is structured in a hybrid lecture/lab format.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

ASSESSMENT - Student performance measurements are based on typical business/industry performance standards. They are grouped into performance competencies (specific skills) and knowledge competencies (understanding specific subjects). The various areas of study during the course will be evaluated by a variety of activities.

Demonstrate conceptual understanding of manual machining processes and practical application of manual machining skills by completing the Coursework Packet and assigned projects detailed in the Project Workbook.

Related Instruction

Communication
Hours: 10

Communicate with instructors and maintain close dialogue while learning safe and efficient industry standard machining processes and techniques.

Activities and projects in the Project Workbook are flagged for one on one communication between student and instructor.  The student needs to verbally articulate demonstrated understanding of industry specific technical jargon as it relates to machining, safety, and production.
