Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Apply blue print reading skills, shop math skills, and both basic and precision measurement skills in the planning and completion of a shop project.
  • Operate a variety of assigned manual machining tools including band saws, drill presses, manual lathes, manual vertical mills, horizontal manual milling machines, and surface grinder to complete a shop project using these machines.
  • Inspect and document quality information on inspection forms using precision and basic measuring tools.

Course Activities and Design

Students will be assigned a project composed of multiple parts that when finished, will assemble into a functioning tool or product.  Most parts will be specified as to what machines to use and students will apply past learning in setting up the machines and manufacturing parts that comply with print and dimensional requirements.  Students will inspect and document quality information relating to the parts they make.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The design of the test project incorporates skillsets acquired in multiple courses, many of which are listed as prerequisites to this course.  In manufacturing the subparts on the various assigned machines, you are being tested on your level of learned skills on those machines.  Students will inspect the various assigned subparts using an assigned inspection form and related scoring rubric.  A final grade will be assigned using an averaging of the scores of the different assigned parts, as well as the final assembly and functionality of the tool or product.
