Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Apply blueprint reading skills, shop math skills, and both basic and precision measurement skills in the planning and completion of an assigned shop project with an emphasis on CNC milling.
- Operate a variety of assigned manual machining tools including band saws, drill presses, manual lathes, manual vertical mills, and CNC milling machines to complete a pre-designed project which tests the students skills on these machines.
- Inspect and document quality information on inspection forms using precision and basic measuring tools.
Course Activities and Design
Students will be assigned a project composed of multiple parts that when finished, will assemble into a functioning tool or product. Most parts will be specified as to what machines to use and students will apply past learning in setting up the machines and manufacturing parts that comply with print and dimensional requirements. Students will inspect and document quality information relating to the parts they make. Of particular focus on this project will be the application of skills on CNC milling machines.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
The design of the test project incorporates skillsets acquired in multiple courses, many of which are listed as prerequisites to this course. In manufacturing the subparts on the various assigned machines, you are being tested on your level of learned skills on those machines. Students will inspect the various assigned subparts using an assigned inspection form and related scoring rubric. A final grade will be assigned using an averaging of the scores of the different assigned parts, as well as the final assembly and functionality of the tool or product.
