Course Description

Covers technical foundations in video production and contemporary equity issues in media. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify file types and media in typical video projects.
  • Use common tools and software programs supporting video production and emerging media.
  • Demonstrate understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues in media.
  • Create personal goals and an action plan for studies in Video Production & Emerging Media.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be based upon a combination of in-class work, reflections, examinations, and skills demonstrated in assigned projects. Determination of problem-solving skills, and communication skills may also be included.

Course Content: Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills
Academic Plan. With guidance of faculty and program Perkins advisor, every student creates an academic plan for certificate/degree/goal completion. Student plans go to Perkins advisor and are reviewed quarterly thereafter for duration of student participation in the program. 
Technical Foundations.

  • Intro to cameras, still and motion image
  • Intro to typical video production software interfaces and functionalities
  • Intro to standard file formats, their differences, benefits and limitations
  • Intro to asset and project management

Equity.
Making a New Reality: a toolkit for inclusive media futures. Instructor facilitates engagement with the Making a New Reality toolkit. Students learn to evaluate socio-technical conditions and to apply lenses, concepts and tools in Making a New Reality.
