Course Description

Covers foundational game engine workflows, scripting concepts, and best practices. Introduces concepts and processes for design and creation of 2D and 3D spaces for games and wide-ranging applications: art, education, simulation, architectural visualization, interactive storytelling and other current or emerging applications. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Use a range of applications for real-time 2D & 3D technologies including gaming, simulation, education, training, architectural visualization, art, and storytelling.
  2. Discuss the relationship of design elements such as 3D models, sprites, sound, video, animation, and visual effects.
  3. Articulate the role of real-time interactive technologies across industries and in shaping culture and creative media output.
  4. Apply principles of game design to the creation, testing, and implementation of responsive interactive designs.
  5. Evaluate projects for technical and artistic quality, pinpointing areas for enhancement.

Course Activities and Design

Course material will be presented in a lecture format. This course is designed to maximize learning through the use of strategies such as outcome based instruction, collaborative learning, contextual application and performance based assessment. Lecture material will consist of discussion, diagrams, multimedia, and other educationally sound practices. Other activities will include hands-on utilization of multimedia software. Demonstration and handout materials will be provided.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The instructor will outline the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a grade at the beginning of the course. Evaluation will be based upon a combination of in-class participation, attendance, examinations, and quality of the multimedia project(s). Determination of problem solving skills, team work, and communication skills may also be included.
