Course Description

Includes ways people learn, identifying employee training development requirements, developing objectives, designing lesson plans, evaluation criteria, developing strategy, alternatives to training, and practicum. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Demonstrate techniques for identifying appropriate learning objectives and measuring outcome
  • Compare different learning styles and describe how to design training that will be best suited for the individual
  • Describe the importance of recognizing how cultural differences may impact learning success (if a culture traditionally teaches orally such as the Native American culture, focus on oral training techniques)
  • Demonstrate methods of intervention should the “learner” not meet the objectives of the training
  • Describe the differences between motivational theories and how these approaches influence learning
  • Explain the process for “teaching” others how to “teach”

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Demonstrate how to develop a training need assessment and describe how to set up a training model in order to meet that need
  • Describe methods for setting measurable objectives and evaluating training effectiveness
  • Explain the importance of maintaining the “self-esteem” of the learner if he/she is struggling with learning the necessary skills for the task
  • Describe steps for selecting and integrating new training technology
  • Describe how to adapt a teaching technique that is usually written into an oral lesson
  • Submit a project or paper focusing on one or more aspects covered in the session or class in addition to classroom instruction

  • Identify various training tools (web-based, trainer led classroom, on-the-job) and describe how to select the method that carries the greatest potential for success
  • Describe criteria for evaluating training effectiveness
  • If the “learner is not successful using one technique,” demonstrate options that may be used to help the learner succeed including oral vs. written instructions
  • Describe the role positive reinforcement has on learning outcomes
  • Explain essential elements to include in an effective evaluation model

  • Assess and adapt today’s technology when designing effective learning environments.
  • Adapt or change teaching techniques when the learner is not successful.
  • Understand the need to balance production needs - training - staffing - profit.
