Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Students may be required to come to the lab after school to work in groups on equipment as a part of homework.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Use hand tools to properly and safely assemble and disassemble mechanical and vacuum fittings and systems.
- Use measurement tools to determine the dimensions of an object and its leveling.
- Differentiate various threaded fasteners types.
- Interpret cross-section view and exploded view schematics to discern components of a mechanical system and their spatial relation.

- Given schematics, procedures, and checklists, perform basic industry preventative maintenance involving the disassembly and assembly of a mechanical system using fasteners.
Course Activities and Design
The course will include instructor delivered lectures and demonstrations stressing key topics in the course. In preparation for the lecture portion of the course, students will be expected to complete all reading and homework assignments. Students will perform independent research, preventative maintenance, and trouble-shooting in class. Students may be required to come to the lab after school to work in groups on equipment as a part of homework.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment of student performance in this course will be in the form of homework, quizzes, exams, in-class lab performance and lab reports.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Course Content
Part 1 Hand Tools and Fasteners:
1. Proper and safe use of hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches. (No sockets, hammers, chisels/punches, saws, files.)
2. Measurement tools such as a level, feeler gauge, and/or ruler to determine how level an object is.
3. Measure dimensions of an object correctly using machinist’s rulers, calipers, and micrometers.
4. Differentiate various threaded fasteners types based on application, head shape, screw drive type, and grade.
5. Understand different designations for threaded fasteners, both imperial and metric.
6. Demonstrate proper tightening of fasteners to correctly joint parts in a mechanical system.
7. Explain the function of washers used in conjunction with threaded fasteners. Identify commonly used types.
8. Explain threaded fastener locking or retention mechanisms.
9. Explain common interference fit mechanisms (such as press fitting, shrink and
expansion fits, snap fits, and retaining rings)
10. Demonstrate proper removal damaged fasteners.
11. Learn how to disassemble and assemble various vacuum fittings. Use this task to practice the fastener skills above in the labs.
