Course Description
Teach swimming and water safety and further develop personal skills in these areas. Successful completion leads to receiving the American Red Cross Water Safety instructor (WSI) certificate. Students must be at least 17 years of age, skilled at intermediate swim level, and have completed pertinent Red Cross requirements. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
A pre-course swimming and water safety skills assessment will be conducted on the first day of class to determine that student is at the proper level for class admittance.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Demonstrate the qualities of an American Red Cross representative.
- Demonstrate the required skills at an acceptable level of performance.
- Apply course material regarding planning, conducting, and evaluating Swimming and Water Safety courses, maintaining course records, and ensuring safety of participants.
- Acquire knowledge of, and become familiar with, a wide variety of course related materials.
- Analyze a participant’s progress and provide corrective feedback and encouragement.
- Obtain knowledge of employment opportunities in the field.
- Acquire skills necessary to teach all levels of the IPAP program, the Learn-to-swim program, Community Water Safety, and the Water Safety Instructor Aide course.

- F.I.T. (Fundamentals of Instructor Training) course material and certification
- Organizing, planning and conducting courses
- Risk management
- Learning theory
- Elements of course design
- Infant and Preschool Aquatics program
- The Learn to Swim program, including swim course outlines, support techniques, and teaching basic skills, new strokes, diving, and starts and turns.
- Customizing the programs
- Community Water Safety and Basic
- Water Rescue Courses Water Safety Instructor Aide course.
- Other Red Cross courses.
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS:
- Participate in class lecture, video, and self-study guide to complete certification for the F.I.T. course.
- Creating and maintaining an ongoing notebook.
- Planning several practice teaching assignments by writing out lesson plans, and block plans.
- Conducting several practice teaching scenarios, both one-on-one and group settings.
- Evaluating classmates and own practice teaching skills, both individual and group settings, using various evaluation techniques.
- Observing many off-campus swimming classes, and turning in reports detailing findings.
- Participate in classroom discussions, demonstrations, and activities.
- Describing information learned from reading assignments, including learning theory, customizing classes for special populations, and teaching principles.
- Performing a variety of swimming and water safety skills during the pre-course session.
- Improving, throughout the term, all strokes and skills that are not quite up to standard.
- Exploring and becoming familiar additional ARC courses and programs, including: Longfellow’s Whale Tales, and Safety Training for Swim Coaches.
