Course Description

Introduces the basic terms, concepts, laws, and administrative rules necessary to interpret and accomplish tasks typically assigned to paralegals by attorneys in intellectual property (IP) law practices. Emphasizes patent and trademark prosecution (filing documents with the United States Patent and Trademark Office), copyrights, and to a lesser extent, unique facets of IP litigation. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:

1. Locate relevant statutes and rules related to patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

2. Assemble and complete all necessary documents to file U.S. Utility, Patent and Trademark applications with the USPTO, and copyright applications with the Library of Congress.

3. Utilize online (no fee) resources to complete tasks specific to paralegal duties in a law firm setting.

4. Analyze and apply intellectual property related issues to fact situations.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Recognizing that student’s ability to demonstrate understanding of this topic

varies with each student, multiple assessment tools will be used including any

combination of the following: written examinations, written essays, legal memos,

oral presentations, projects, homework, in-class discussion, participation,

attendance, group workshop activities, and other methods as deemed necessary

by the instructor.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

This course utilizes a mix of traditional lecture format that encourages dialog

between the instructor and students, in-class workshops, student presentations,

and formal examinations. This course exposes the students to both substantive

law relating to Patents, Trademarks and Copyrights, and procedural tasks

typically assigned to legal assistants and paralegals.

The lecture, reading assignments, homework, projects, and in-class workshops

each provide an important piece of the learning experience; therefore,

appropriate emphasis is placed on all these components.

Skills

To be successful in this course, students should have experience – before

enrolling in this class – with:

Accessing the Internet;

-

Searching the world-wide-web (i.e. using Google, Yahoo, etc.)

-

a document to a *.pdf formatted document (i.e. MS Word to

Adobe);

Typing assignments on a word-processing program and converting

-

Attaching documents to e-mail correspondence;

-

announcements, and e-mail;

Utilizing my.pcc to retrieve course materials, assignments,

-

presentation program (i.e. MS Powerpoint).

In addition, by the completion of this course, students will be able to

demonstrate proficiency in:

Knowledge of a spreadsheet program (i.e. MS Excel) and a

-

Locating and applying relevant statutes and rules;

Analyzing legal issues for IP content;

Assistants; and

Performing tasks typically assigned to IP-paralegals or IP-Legal

formats.
