Course Description

Covers vascular contrast media chemistry & characteristics, techniques and equipment used to catheterize the vascular system, indications for various vascular/cardiac diagnostic and interventional procedures, and selective vascular anatomy. Introduces computed tomography, magnetic resonance, nuclear medicine, sonography, radiation therapy, mammography, and DEXA (dual energy x-ray absorptiometry).

Addendum to Course Description

The course Survey of Advanced Imaging Modalities is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program.  It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography.  Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

1. Describe physics fundamentals for computed tomography, magnetic resonance, nuclear medicine, sonography, radiation therapy, DEXA, mammography, and interventional/cath lab fluoroscopy techniques.

2. Differentiate applications of each imaging modality for specific pathologies and clinical indications.

3. Describe credentialing route(s) for technologists in imaging modalities covered.

4. Explain the imaging routines and sequencing of exams in response to patient and staff inquires.

5. Assist in the performance of advanced radiologic and imaging procedures in the clinical setting, using appropriate patient care and safety, and positioning techniques.

Course Activities and Design

Students will participate in faculty-led lectures and class discussions, including small group breakouts. 
Several guest lecturers from industry/clinical environments will be featured, via both video and in person.

Students will research modalities and write a report on their chosen modality, and present their findings to the class.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Outcomes will be assessed through a variety of written assignments/reports, homework assignments, exams and research projects/presentations.

  1. Compare and contrast modes of image creation in various imaging modalities

  2. Analyze equipment requirements  for CT compared to diagnostic radiography.

  3. Describe and apply safety measure for all persons in a MRI unit magnetic field.

  5. Identify various radioactive tracers used for diagnostic imaging.

  6. Describe properties of sound waves in acquiring ultrasound images


Cath lab/interventional unit skills:
1. Determine equipment and supplies utilized for common procedures in this unit.
2. Indicate the contrast media typically used and route of administration for each of the procedures.
3. Explain patient preparation for various advanced procedures, to include indications, contraindications and complications.
4. Describe common interventional techniques utilized today such as embolization including chemo- and radio-embolization, angioplasty, stenting and filters, ablation, thrombolysis & thrombectomy, and kypho-/vertebroplasty
