Course Description

Provides clinical education experience in an affiliated hospital radiology department under the supervision of registered radiographer and radiologist. Includes application of equipment manipulation and operation, radiological imaging procedures, radiation protection, medicolegal and ethical protocol, recordkeeping, and patient care. Requires clinical competencies, objectives, performance assessment and attendance. Department permission required.

Addendum to Course Description

The student will learn the necessary skills that are required to function in the clinical area as a radiologic technologist, and will demonstrate proper work ethic as a radiographer and health care provider. This course is designed as Competent/Proficient Level 4.
Radiography Clinic VII (RAD 230) is required as part of the Radiologic Technology degree program. It is also a prerequisite for taking the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists examination for certification in Radiography. Transferability of credit depends entirely upon the institution to which the student wishes to transfer. Prior to enrolling in this course the student must be accepted in the Radiography Program and have successfully completed the prerequisite courses.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Perform all skills with increasing independence (indirect supervision) and use critical thinking skills to handle complex situations.
  2. Apply knowledge of technique chart development to the formulation of techniques in the clinical setting.
  3. Successfully complete a job interview and provide a professional resume to a prospective employer.
  4. Exhibit professional behaviors and a positive attitude toward continuing education and professional growth.

Course Activities and Design

Level 4 COMPETENT/PROFICIENT:
The student must have the ability to perform all skills accurately and demonstrate knowledge and judgement independently within an appropriate time frame and parameters. The student must demonstrate the ability to critique images to satisfy the diagnostic needs of the department and demonstrate the ability to "run" a radiographic room independently with indirect supervision. The student must satisfactorily meet this level to warrant program graduation.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Complete a minimum number of diagnostic exams (clinical competencies) that correlate with RAD 101-205.
  2. Complete clinical rotations, successfully.
  3. Complete the exercises in the clinical syllabus, room objectives and film critiques, successfully.

  1. Assess your skill level and identify areas that need improvement.
  2. Formulate manual techniques for small, average and large adults, and average 5 year old patients for select upper and lower extremities.
  3. Prepare a “professional looking resume” and employ effective interviewing techniques during a prospective job interview.
  4. Participate in continuing education offerings and research the benefits of joining professional organizations.
  5. Complete age-specific competency materials at your clinical site.
