Course Description

Emphasizes conversational skills and listening comprehension at the second-year level. Recommended: Completion of first year Russian at college level or instructor permission. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Manages common day-to-day interactions in predictable setting, using basic vocabulary, present, past and future tenses.
  2. Applies language-learning skills.
  3. Recognizes and approaches cultural differences with respect and open-mindedness.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Active participation in class
  2. Oral interviews with instructor
  3. In class, interactive student role-plays and other pair activities
  4. Individual and group presentations

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Include all or most of the following:

  1. Furniture and rooms in a house
  2. Housing in Russia
  3. Describing objects in a room
  4. Hobbies and interests
  5. Travel and vacation
  6. Family
  7. Family origin and nationality


Competencies and Skills:

  1. Describes placement of objects
  2. Manages basic discussions about interests, hobbies, family past activities, plans for future and vacations
  3. Begins to use aspect correctly in the past tense
  4. Formulates questions and answers
  5. Follows basic directions
  6. Recognizes cultural differences
  7. Comprehends slow native speech in a highly contextual setting.
  8. Makes himself/herself understood by a native speaker accustomed to non-native speakers.
