Course Description

Emphasizes conversational skills and listening comprehension at the second-year level. Recommended: Completion of RUS 202 or instructor permission. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Manages common day-to-day interactions in predictable setting, using basic vocabulary, present, past and future tenses.
  2. Applies language-learning skills.
  3. Recognizes and approaches cultural differences with respect and open-mindedness.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Active participation in class
  2. Oral interviews with instructor
  3. In class, interactive student role-plays and other pair activities
  4. Individual and group presentations

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Include all or most of the following:

  1. Describing motion and routes
  2. Making comparisons
  3. Giving commands
  4. Russian superstitions and proverbs
  5. Professions and careers
  6. Hypothetical conditions
  7. Russian art
  8. Prefixed verbs of motion
  9. Comparative adjectives
  10. Imperative forms of verbs
  11. Conditional mood
  12. Subjunctive mood


Competencies and Skills:

  1. Gives commands, makes comparisons, describes routes, discusses professions in short paragraph lengh utterances.
  2. Manages more complex interactions in familiar situations covering a variety of topics in a culturally appropriate way
  3. Correctly uses aspect in both past and future tenses but not consistently
  4. Formulates more complex questions and answers
  5. Follows more complex directions
  6. Recognizes cultural differences
  7. Comprehends average speed native speech in a familiar setting.
  8. Makes himself/herself understood by a native speaker accustomed to non-native speakers.
