Course Description
Introduces vocal production through a series of exercises which will increase muscle awareness, flexibility and freedom. Includes the mechanics of blank verse, auditioning and material selection as well as voice projection, articulation and performance. Audit available.

The course will include information about the mechanics of blank verse, auditioning and material selection as well as voice projection, articulation and performance.
Intended Outcomes for the course
As an introductory course, the class will include a combination of lecture/discussion, group activities and video presentations. The student will work on good spinal alignment and awareness of the tensions and holding patterns in the body and keep a daily written journal logging outside practice and reactions to exercises.
Students will further work on presentation of monologues and poetry exercises utilizing the skills discussed and practiced.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Apply understanding of how exercises prepare one for an instinctive vocal response.
- Identify and apply freedom and flexibility to the verse material.
- Illustrate how to maximize one's vocal energy.
- Identify the tension and relaxation in one's vocal instrument and
- illustrate the importance of the exercises in freeing the voice.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between muscle relaxation, tension and vocal use.
- Identify the facial muscles used in speaking and demonstrate an understanding of how they are needed to create clear and accurate speech.
- Demonstrate the ability to put the mechanics of breathing and speech together.

- Describe the concept of listening freshly, responding moment to moment.
