Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Identify materials/supplies used in Cardiology, Interventional Radiology, and Interventional Neurology to include interventional and structural heart procedures.
- Identify appropriate sterile techniques associated with cardiology, radiology and neurology cases.
Course Activities and Design
Identify materials by photos and or descriptions of use, materials used in the cath lab setting. Outline sterile technique procedures by order of operation for given scenarios.

2. Successfully pass unit exams associated with each modality
3. Successfully describe and outline sterile procedures and techniques associated with specific case studies highlighting each modality
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
1. Sterile resources used for interventional procedures
2. Procedure for setting up a sterile interventional table
3. Sterile apparel to be worn during interventional procedures
4. Resources used to prepare access site
5. Solutions required for interventional procedures
6. Physical characteristics, dimensions, shapes and sizes of catheters, needs and guidewires
7. Factors that affect flow rate
8. Function and application of angiography, atherectomy, balloon angioplasty, retrieval, occluding and infusing catheters
9. Construction, function and application of regular fixed-core, movable-core, exchange, J-shaped, biliary, axillary, tip-deflecting, high-torque, open-ended, stiff-shaft and coated guidewires
10.Function of dilators, introducer sheathes, and stents (vascular and nonvascular, covered and noncovered, stent grafts)
11. Uses of adaptors, torque devices, connectors, stopcocks and manifolds
12. Importance of closed-system manifold connections
13. Types and construction of caval filters and implantable devices
14. Setup, use and safety precautions while performing C02 angiography
15. Isolation cases (clean and dirty staff)
