Course Description
Covers fundamentals of and use of Ultrasound and CT imaging in a Catheterization Lab.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe the physics and application of ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) as used in a Catheterization Lab.
Course Activities and Design
Lectures from field experts associated with ultrasound and CT, supplemental course packets.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Testing over basic US and CT physics, use for both as they pertain to the cath lab.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Identify the basic principles of ultrasonographic imaging, including sound wave characteristics, attenuation and echoes.
- Describe the effect transducer selection has on image resolution.
- Explain the Doppler effect and how it is used in the examination of vascular structures.
- Evaluate the benefits of continuous wave, pulsed wave and color-flow Doppler imaging.
- List bioeffects and patient safety concerns associated with ultrasonographic imaging.
- Describe the use of intravascular ultrasound with catheter-based interventions.
- Identify ultrasound-guided interventional techniques and procedures.
CT
- Distinguish normal anatomical structures in the transverse or axial, coronal, sagittal and orthogonal (oblique) cross-sectional imaging planes within the:
- Head
- Neck
- Thorax
- Abdomen
- Pelvis
- Body imaging
- Extremities — large joints
- Distinguish common pathologies recorded on multiplanar images.
