Addendum to Course Description

This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format. This course includes classroom discussions, videos, and lab demonstrations of technical skills.  Course outcomes will include: theoretical concepts, layout, fabrication, welding, oxy-fuel cutting and safety. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Function safely in the PCC Welding Shop.

  • Apply math and science concepts to welding related process.

  • Operate oxy-fuel portable and track cutting systems in accordance with industry standards.

  • Interpret blueprints to accurately lay out, prepare, and assemble weld joints.

  • Understand and apply fundamentals of submerged arc welding (SAW) operations.

  • Weld common joint assemblies with the submerged arc welding (SAW) to AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code.

  • Apply visual and destructive examination principles and practices in accordance with AWS D1.1.

Course Activities and Design

Welding lec/lab courses are Open Entry and Open Exit (OE/OE) and are offered concurrently. Courses are designed to meet the needs of the students with flexible scheduling options.  Students may attend full time or part time. This is an OE/OE course which does not align with the normal academic calendar.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The student will be assessed on his/her ability to demonstrate the development of course outcomes. The methods of assessment may include one or more of the following: oral or written examinations, quizzes, written assignments, visual inspection and welding tests.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Function safely in the PCC Welding lab.

  • Understand and practice personal safety by using proper protective gear
  • Understand and practice power tool safety
  • Understand and practice equipment safety for welding and oxy-fuel cutting systems
  • Understand and maintain a safe work area
    • Recognize and report dangerous electrical and air/gas hose connections
    • Understand and practice fire prevention

Apply math and science concepts to welding related process.

  • Determine steel costs by weight per square foot calculations

  • Explain the characteristics of the SAW process as it relates to common electrodes and flux combinations

  • Explain how Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Cracking Possible

  • Describe mechanical properties of weld metal deposited by SAW
     

Operate oxy-fuel portable and track cutting systems in accordance with industry standards.

  • Demonstrate correct setup and shutdown procedures for the hand cutting and track cutting systems

  • Perform oxy fuel cutting with guided practice

Interpret blueprints to accurately lay out, prepare, and assemble weld joints.

  • Interpret lines, symbols and verbiage on project drawing

  • Lay out material per drawing specifications

  • Use the oxyfuel cutting process to cut material to specified dimensions

  • Grind material to meet specifications

  • Assemble weld project per specification

Understand and apply fundamentals of submerged arc welding (SAW) operations.

  • Use correct terminology

    • Define terms used in the SAW process

  • Equipment identification, setup, shut down, and principles of operation for SAW

    • Power source identification and adjustment

    • Welding lead, connections, inspection, and use

    • Electrode and Flux identification, characteristics, and use

  • Know essential variables of SAW by demonstrating the effects of the following variables: travel speed, electrode angle, voltage and wire feed speed

Weld common joint assemblies with the submerged arc welding (SAW) to AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Code.

  • Demonstrate correct welding techniques with the SAW

    • Starting and stopping

    • Overlapping welds

    • Follow a welding procedure

  • Demonstrate correct welding techniques in the following joints:

    • Flat Position

      • T- joint

      • Groove joint

    • Horizontal Position

      • T-joint

Apply visual and destructive examination principles and practices in accordance with AWS D1.1.

  • Evaluate welds using appropriate welding inspection tools
  • Assess weld discontinuities causes and corrections
