Course Description

Introduces wireless networking theory and its practical application. Explores a variety of current and emerging wireless Local, Metropolitan, and Wide Area Networking technologies. Topics may include: WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth, WiMAX (802.16), 3G Cellular, and others. Includes hands-on design of wireless networks and the configuration of wireless Access Points. Prerequisites: CIS 179, or instructor permission. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

On successful completion of this course the student should be able to do the following in either a business or home setting:

  • Design and Configure Wireless LANs
  • Select appropriate wireless technologies
  • Identify wireless security risks
  • Predict the performance of wireless as compared to wired networks

Course Activities and Design

This course is presented by means of:

  • on-campus lectures or distance learning lessons
  • discussions,
  • individual lab assignments
  • and/or group lab assignments

Students will be required to use essential tools covered in this course to complete the lab assignments.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will take exams, participate in discussions, and do research which results in either a presentation or paper.
