Course Description

Introduces concepts for Expanded Functions Dental Assisting (EFDA) certification as allowed by the Oregon Dental Practice Act, and Expanded Functions Orthodontic Dental Assistant (EFODA). Focuses on the rationale and procedures for coronal polishing, amalgam and composite finishing/polishing, fluoride application, retraction cord placement, pit and fissure sealant placement, and orthodontic specialty procedures. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Dental Assisting program. Prerequisites/concurrent: Corequisites: DA 182.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the expanded functions delegated to dental assistants with EFDA nad EFODA certifications.

  2. Identify the rationale, materials needed, and procedural steps for coronal polishing.

  3. Identify proper protocols and instruments used in amalgam and composite finishing and polishing.

  4. Recognize the materials and procedural steps for fluoride application.

  5. Identify proper protocols and instruments used in placement of retraction cord.

  6. Identify the indications and contraindications for sealant placement, as well as the procedural steps for application.

  7. Recognize various orthodontic instruments, treatment protocols, and procedures.
