Course Description

Introduces the identification and utilization of different strategies to strengthen teaming and communication specific to the field of child and family studies. Covers culture and communication, including communicating with colleagues, staff and parents in early learning and social service environments. Prerequisites: WR 115, RD 115 and MTH 20 or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify the conflict and communication styles of parents, colleagues, and supervisors based on culture and specific roles.
  2. Use communication strategies to work with parents, colleagues, and supervisors at a beginning level.

Course Activities and Design

The course will include large group lecture, small group discussions, PPTs, videos, self-assessment, observations, self-assessment, role-playing, reflection writing and presentation. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to identity the five styles of conflict resolutions (e.g., Thomas/Hilman)
  2. Students will observe adult conversations and identify the styles used
  3. Students will role play scenarios and practices communicating with differing styles in early education settings
  4. One- 30 minute observation and write up required
  5. Capstone- students will write an assessment of own style and identify strengths and areas for improvement
  6. Final 15 minute presentation on own style and growth over the course

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Self Evaluation of Conflict Styles

Identify the 5 conflict styles in relationship to culture (e.g., ethnicity, class, gender, etc.)

Basic strategies for approaching each style

Basic active listening and non-defensive communication skills

Basic understanding of teaming and communication issues in early education

Basic understanding of appreciation strategies in relationship to early education settings

Definition Clarification: 

  • Culture is defined as: ethnicity, gender, class, etc. 
  • Roles are defined as colleagues, parents, and staff, etc.
