Course Description

Presents high-frequency vocabulary in a variety of contexts, including academic and informal settings. Covers vocabulary in both oral and written contexts. Does not replace courses in the core curriculum.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify and use selected high-frequency vocabulary in a variety of oral and written contexts at an intermediate level of mastery. 
  2. Distinguish between vocabulary that is more appropriate in formal and informal contexts. 
  3. Evaluate and apply vocabulary learning strategies.

Course Activities and Design

Class time includes a combination of presentation, small group and whole class discussion ,and other spoken and written practice. Other activities may include videos and group projects. Homework includes preparation for all the above as well as activities such as journal writing, practice exercises and study for quizzes and tests. 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Vocabulary journals, quizzes, tests, student writing and oral presentations.

  3. Phrasal verbs 

  4. Collocations 

  5. Parts of speech 

B. Vocabulary in context 

  1. strategies on how to guess the meaning of words in context

  2. use readings and other contexts to identify grammatical and semantic features of vocabulary

  3. use of a monolingual dictionary 

C. Learning strategies 

  1. strategies for effective ways to learn vocabulary
