Course Description

Cover and analyze the operation of refrigeration system components. Includes compressors, condensers, evaporators, refrigerants and metering devices. Lab includes system components and compressor testing methods, focusing on charging, evacuation and recovery methods. FMT 102 and APR 132 cannot both be taken for credit. Prerequisites: FMT 101 or APR 131 or TE 9242. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

As the second course in the refrigeration sequence, it focuses applied knowledge and skills learned in Refrigeration I, on the operation and
servicing of domestic refrigerators and freezers.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the fundamentals of refrigeration as a base for a more in-depth study of the components of a system in order to service domestic refrigerators and freezers.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the basic operation and construction of a variety of compression systems in order to be able to diagnose mechanical difficulties.
  3. Explain the fundamentals of electricity and demonstrate understanding of the construction and operation of electric motors, controls and circuits used in domestic refrigerators and freezers.
  4. Explain the structure and operation of a variety of electric motors as a basis for servicing those found in domestic refrigerators and freezers.
  5. Explain the characteristics of commonly used refrigerants and how they are selected and used in domestic refrigerators and freezers.
  6. Explain the structure and function of condensers and demonstrate ability to troubleshoot common problems.
  7. Explain the function and operation of an evaporator and its relationship to the condenser in a refrigeration cycle.
  8. Explain the structure and operation of metering devices that function as controls in a refrigeration system.
  9. Explain the components of the refrigeration system to the servicing and repairing of domestic refrigerators and freezers.
  10. Demonstrate the skills needed to install and service a small hermetic system.

Course Activities and Design

Class activities will include lectures, discussions, and laboratory activities.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation will be based on two or more of the following: reading assignments and homework, laboratory activities, written examinations, and attendance and participation. Evaluation procedures will be discussed the first week of class and the instructor's specific grading policy will be defined in a course hand-out.
