Covers the basics of cooling, tower, boiler, waste water, and water purification systems. Topics include corrosion, scale, fouling and bacteria related issues. Mechanical equipment pertaining to water treatment is included. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course provides a foundation for the understanding of water related issues. Any water system must address corrosion, scale, fouling, and bacteria. Students will be able to identify potential problems before they occur and develop a plan to maintain or improve water system efficiency. Water conservation will be stressed along with system control.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Identify mechanical components of water systems.
  • Identify and describe chemical safety.
  • Describe common problems in water systems a given application
  • Describe methods of corrective treatment
  • Demonstrate the ability to identify and define key water terminology.

Course Activities and Design

Lectures center on applications, operation and maintenance of water systems. Includes cooling towers, and chilled water circulation. The student will research contaminants found in water systems in a group setting to facilitate individual learning.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The learner will complete written examinations, quizzes, homework, and project with a 70% average score to provide evidence of an understanding of concepts and skills identified. See instructor syllabus.
