Course Description

Chilled water and its application in the industrial/ institutional setting. Covers chiller compressors, refrigerants, air cooled and water cooled condensers, controls and piping. Prerequisites: FMT 103 or APR 133 or TE 9244. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course provides a foundation of chiller systems and applications. Concepts include theory of operation, compressor applications, chilled water circulation, efficiency ratings, and refrigerants commonly used in Chillers. Cooling tower operation and maintenance are included.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  1. Identify Chiller system components
  2. Identify cooling tower components.
  3. Select appropriate Chiller components for a given application
  4. Diagram a chilled water system

Course Activities and Design

Lectures center on applications, operation and maintenance of Chillers, cooling towers, and chilled water circulation. In this context, the student will research system requirements, operation and maintenance of Chiller Systems.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

The learner will complete two written examinations, complete class assignments and quizzes with a minimum average score of 70%. This will provide evidence of learning the concepts identified during lecture and class discussions.
