Course Description
Focuses on operation and service requirements of heat pumps. Demonstrates the application and understanding of the test equipment required to service the heat pumps. Includes the function of the control system required for operation of the heat pump system. Prerequisites: FMT 103 or APR 133 or TE 9244. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
This course is designed to fill the needs of job upgrading and for working heating and cooling mechanics. The course will deal mainly with the electric heat pump and will cover the basics and fundamentals of operation, installation and service.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Demonstrate knowledge of refrigeration as a basis for understanding the principles of heat transfer as applied to heat pumps.
- Demonstrate understanding of the basic principles of a heat pump system as an effective heating/cooling system.
- Illustrate knowledge of the four basic types of heat pump systems as the basis for repairing and servicing these systems.
- Demonstrate understanding of the operation of each component of the refrigeration-cycle as it applies to a heat pump system.
- Demonstrate understanding of the purpose and function of each component of a heat pump system in order to service major heat pump systems.
- Demonstrate understanding of the structure and function of heat pump controls and how these controls are designed into a heat pump system.
- Demonstrate understanding of and ability to calculate total heat load for a variety of heat pump systems and ability to explain these design factors to a potential customer.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the importance of air distribution to a heat pump system and ability to calculate size and distribution.
- Demonstrate ability to diagram a heat pump installation plan and perform specific steps in the installation.
- Demonstrate ability to use manufacturer' charts and instruction to service or repair selected major heat pump components.
- Demonstrate selected start-up and service procedures.
- Demonstrate ability to read, interpret and use manufacturer°s wiring diagrams and use textbook as a resource for future practice in the field.
Course Activities and Design
This class is conducted in a lecture-discussion format with laboratory activities focusing on the servicing and installation of selected major heat pump units.

Evaluation procedures will be discussed during the first class meeting.
