Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
This course is a core requirement for the AAS degree in Fire Protection and is transferable to Eastern Oregon University for the Fire Service Administration program.
Intended Outcomes for the course
• Identify effective recruitment, retention, and promotion strategies
• Utilize effective multicultural awareness training methods.
• Communicate effectively with others in multicultural communities.
• Describe positive public safety approaches specific to diverse cultures.
Aspirational Goals
Differentiate between the firefighter image and cultural sensitivity.
Course Activities and Design
The content of the course will be presented in lecture, classroom discussions, role playing, demonstrations, practical skills demonstration as appropriate. Additional instruction methodology may include guest speaker, research papers, professional publication reviews, written and oral reports, and class presentations.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Methods of assessment may include one or more of the following:
- Various individual and/or group skill building activities such as role-playing scenario based problem solving activities, case studies, or other exercises geared toward critical analysis of course concepts.
- Written assignments or oral reports designed to integrate course material into personal experience or experiences of other.
- Quizzes and exams composed of objective questions and concepts.
- Individual and /or team projects/s which require integration, application, and critical examination of course concepts, issues, and themes.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
This course will address topics that include, but are not limited to:
• The changing fire department which is a microcosm of society.
• Multicultural representation in the fire service: recruitment,
retention and promotion.
• Protected and non-protected class status, Civil rights Act, ADA,
Sexual Harassment and EEOC.
• Male, female, sexual orientation, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender issues.
• Communication and cross-cultural communication.
• Public safety contact with Asian/Pacific Americans.
• Public safety contact with African Americans.
• Public safety contact with European Americans.
• Public safety contact with Latino/Hispanic Americans.
• Public safety contact with Arab Americans and other Middle
Eastern groups.
• Public safety contact with American Indians.
• Public safety contact with Class stratification, Homeless and
Emotionally/Mentally Ill persons.
• Firefighter image and cultural sensitivity.
