Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
French 213A is a second-year level course designed to improve students' ability to converse in French. It provides the opportunity for conversational practice with the structures and vocabulary students have encountered or are encountering in their second-year French course. It is therefore also a good review course for students who wish to prepare for further study in French or for those traveling to a French-speaking area. Offered for three hours of transferable credit, FR 213A is a one term course. It counts as an elective for the associate degrees.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Students who successfully complete FR 213A will improve their speaking ability, using vocabulary and structures common in everyday conversations with French speakers.
Course Activities and Design
After the introduction to the course, French will be spoken at all times in the classroom. Students will participate in oral exercises that will stress specific vocabulary or grammatical structures. These may include role playing, interviews, presentations. Much of the classwork will be done with partners in order to maximize the amount of time during which French can be practiced. Students must attend all classes, reflect on what they have learned, study assigned material, prepare brief oral assignments and participate actively in each class session. Students should plan on about one hour of outside preparation for each class session. No examinations will be given.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Students will be assessed globally on oral work done in class during the term, including willingness to participate, preparation, individual progress, and improving competence. Though tests are not used as an assessment tool, attendance is an important factor.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
The goal of the course is that students speak French and that their speaking ability with the language improve. Successful students have reviewed, expanded, and perfected previously learned material and will be able to use the communication topics and structures of FR 203 or FR 251.
