Course Description

Provides in-depth and specific job search and self-promotion skill development. Includes essential skills for internship site procurement. A written learning contract which is specific to this course and mutually agreed upon by the student and instructor must be completed prior to registration. Prerequisites: Instructor Permission, and FT 131.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Apply career navigation skills when researching and selecting an exercise science internship site.
  2. Apply self-promotion strategies and skills to acquire an internship or employment in the fitness and wellness industry.
  3. Meet learning outcomes specific to this course as mutually agreed upon by the student and instructor in advance through a written learning contract.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation by instructor via observations, written/verbal feedback and conferences.

Portfolio of written assignments and self reflection.

  1. Conduct research on internship sites in the fitness and wellness industry

  2. Use the FIND model to determine best internship site choice

  3. Prepare an internship application, resume, cover letter, and follow up/thank you letter.

  4. Generate internship‐specific learning objectives and activities

  5. Investigate special project opportunities

  6. Professional business writing (resumes, cover letters, etc.)

  7. Pre‐interview prep and interviewing skills

  8. Reflect on one’s skills and attributes

  9. Professionalism

  10. Decision making
